Our Team’s Favorite Thanksgiving Recipes

What’s your favorite part of Thanksgiving? Maybe it’s the football or the parade, but for us here at Rx Optical, it’s all about enjoying a good meal with friends and family.

We always have Thanksgiving classics like turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing, but sometimes, we like to spice it up. Some of our staff has shared their favorite holiday recipes, so we wanted to share them with you, our second family.

No-Knead Dinner Rolls

Simple is always better, right?

This recipe is a staff favorite for exactly that reason. It’s simple, easy and delicious! And because the recipe creates a large sum of dough, it gives the baker the capability to make two different types of rolls.

We love to split the dough in two and create a morning sweet roll and a classic dinner roll. Of course, the flavors are up to you, but we absolutely love these blueberry lemon sweet rolls. Just be sure to share them with your loved ones this coming holiday.

Candied Sweet Potatoes

These candied sweet potatoes are a Thanksgiving must, according to our staff, and sweet potatoes are great for your eye health, too. Plus, this is even a no peel recipe! All you need to do is clean and scrub your sweet potatoes or yams (your choice), boil until they’re tender, and the skins will fall right off.

Cut your potatoes into half inch slices and throw them in a skillet with brown sugar, butter, water and salt. Let them all mingle, and tada! You have a yummy and simple dish that even your pickiest relative will love.

Spoon Bread Casserole

If you love corn bread and casserole, look no further. This recipe was made for you.

This spoon bread casserole is a twist on a classic dry bread. It’s filled with moisture and is absolutely delicious.

Made with corn, dry mix, sour cream, eggs and butter, this recipe is a must have on your Thanksgiving menu. And while the recipe says it makes 6-8 servings, in our experience it’s so good, it will be devoured before it’s even on the table. Be sure to double the portions. Your family will thank you!

Pumpkin Roll

What is Thanksgiving without a pumpkin dessert? Well, it would still be Thanksgiving, but we sure do love this pumpkin roll recipe!

This pinwheel roll-up is perfect for any cream cheese lover, and it’ll be sure to leave your sweet tooth happy and satisfied. While the photos of these even and perfectly rolled desserts make it seem easy, trust us, the perfect spiral will come with practice. Don’t be discouraged, though! Even if your roll isn’t Instagram worthy, it will still receive a five-star rating from your taste buds.

We love sharing our traditions with you. It’s just another way for us to show you that we care! While you’re planning your Thanksgiving meal, be sure to remember to include foods that are good for your eye health. Your family will love the nutritious and delicious meal.

Fun Halloween Costumes with Glasses

We love fall activities, which means we also love Halloween! It’s the holiday made for self-expression and creativity. It’s also the one day of the year where you get candy and the opportunity to put on a fun costume.

For us, the best costume is all in the details, and that includes the perfect set of glasses. So, to embrace both our profession and the spirit of the holiday, we made a list of our favorite Halloween costumes that all rock an iconic pair of frames.

Get Magical

Embrace your inner wizard this Halloween by dressing up as Harry Potter. While you may not be able to cast any spells or charms, it’s easy to at least look like this pop icon!

The Harry Potter costume includes a black robe, a scarlet and gold scarf, a wand, and, of course, thin round glasses. Oh, and don’t forget about the lightning shaped scar!

A pair of thin round glasses similar to those Harry Potter wears.

Get Super

Did you know Superman has a day job? Yup! Clark Kent, Superman’s civilian alter ego, is actually a newspaper reporter.

To complete Clark Kent’s look, you’ll need a white oxford shirt, a black tie, dark slacks, a Superman logo shirt and the iconic square framed glasses, like this pair from Dragon.

Get Mysterious

Hop in the Mystery Machine and grab your Scooby snacks for our next pick!

As an integral member of Mystery Inc., Velma Dinkley is always in fashion with chunky black frames, just like this pair from Alain Mikli Paris. To complete the look, all you need is a red skirt, oversized orange sweater, orange knee high socks and red flats.

A pair of chunky black glasses similar . to the type Velma Dinkley wore.

Get Hidden

Feel like blending in this Halloween? Dress up like Waldo. Even those with 20-20 vision will have a hard time finding you.

This costume is simple and easy. All you need is a pair of black pants, a horizontally striped red and white shirt, a matching hat, and a round shaped pair of glasses! Who knew a disguise could be that simple?

Get Royal

Next, we’re going back to the early 2000s with Amelia Mignonette Grimalidi Thermopolis Renaldo, Princess of Genovia.

Doesn’t Ring a bell? Think pears and The Princess Diaries.

See, being a princess for Halloween would be cool, but being Mia Thermopolis before her princess lessons would be way cooler. To complete the look, you will need a light blue oxford shirt, a blue blazer, a black tie, a blue plaid skirt, a pair of black knee high socks and some slim framed glasses like this pair from Coach.

A pair of slim framed glasses simlar to the kind Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries wore.

Halloween is a great time to dress up in styles you might not wear otherwise. Once you try on one of these pairs of glasses, you might find that you they’re your new go-to for your daily eyewear. We can’t wait to see you rock your new look.

Do you have a different costume in mind? Make sure to schedule an appointment with us! We can help pair you with glasses that will help you rock your costume and keep your vision clear for years to come.

National Sunglasses Day

It’s that time of the year again (finally!). The doctors at Rx Optical are excited and ready to celebrate our favorite eye-related holiday of the year: National Sunglasses Day.

The sun’s rays are extremely dangerous and harmful to your vision. We are passionate about preventative eye care. That’s why we provide our patients with helpful tips to protect their sight throughout the year (even in the winter!).

Wearing sunglasses is the best way to protect your eyes from the sun. This year, we’re protecting our eyes and celebrating eye health at the same time on National Sunglasses Day. National Sunglasses Day is held on Thursday, June 27. This celebration spreads awareness of how sunglasses can protect your eyes from UV rays.

Facts About Harmful UV Rays

UV rays are harmful rays that are produced by the sun. They’re broken into three different types: UVA, UVB and UVC. Both UVA and UVB rays reach the Earth and are dangerous to our eyes, but UVB light is the most dangerous. Since these rays are produced by the sun, they can be stronger when it’s highest in the sky. That means rays are most harmful between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., but you still need protection throughout the whole day.

Many people believe that they’re only at risk on sunny summer days, but that isn’t true. Since the rays are capable of passing through clouds, you also need to wear sunglasses when it’s overcast. Surprisingly, snow can reflect up to 80 percent of UV light, which means that these rays are still damaging even in the dead of winter.

Although UV rays can harm your vision in any weather, keep in mind that UV light can be increased by humid conditions, which means it’s easier to get UV damage when you’re on the coast or somewhere else that’s humid.

Why Wear Sunglasses?

Sunglasses help protect our eyes from irreversible damage like cataracts or macular degeneration. While we all know that looking directly at the sun isn’t safe, being outside without sunglasses still hurts your eyes almost as much. UV rays take no days off, so always bring sun-glasses with you, even on cloudy, snowy, or rainy days.

At Rx Optical, we offer prescription sunglasses so that you can always have clear vision, even when you’re protecting your eyes from damaging sunlight. Who knew healthy living started with stylish frames?

Getting ready to send your kids back to school in August can seem like a daunting task. From gathering new school supplies to learning how to fall back into a normal routine, there is a lot to take care of. One very important item that tends to be overlooked: a comprehensive eye exam for children. Our doctors always keep an eye out for potential eye health threats based on the season. Dressing up for Halloween in the fall is always a fun tradition, however, the trend of unregulated cosmetic lenses are posing serious threats to users. Dr. Mike Murphy shared the dangers of cosmetic contact lenses with the team at WXYZ-TV in Detroit.

We carry an effective kit at all of our locations. The RxOptical PHD-50 Lens Cleaning Kit, which is included with our Worry FreeWarranty, contains a 6-ounce cleaner spray bottle, 30 pre-moistened lens cloths, and a microfiber cloth. Winter Sunglasses

Everyone layers on jackets, scarves, and hats during the winter season, but most are forgetting a crucial part of their wardrobe: sunglasses. Just because the sun is not beaming high in the sky does not mean that you are free from harmful UV rays.

The glasses wearer in your life will no doubt love a stylish pair of prescription sunglasses that will protect from UV rays, snow and ice glare, and harsh winter winds. Rx Optical carries a wide variety of sunglasses at all locations that you can choose from this holiday season.

Microfiber Cleaning Cloth

Microfiber cleaning clothes are a great stocking stuffer for glasses and sunglass wearers alike. Blended microfibers have the ability to pick up and lock dirt, dust, moisture, and bacteria thanks to their tiny asterisk shape. Microfiber is also positively charged which means it attracts dirt like a magnet.

Microfiber cleaning cloths are inexpensive, easy to find, and serve a variety of uses beyond glasses-wearers too.
