Michigan is proud to be home to many amazing sports teams and to the fans who cheer them on. Our team at Rx Optical is filled with some intense sports enthusiasts, so we decided to round up some fun facts about Michigan’s beloved sports teams.
Sit back, learn some trivia, and then get excited to watch some of Michigan’s favorite teams at work.
The Detroit Pistons
Before all of our basketball fans read the title and feel left out, we didn’t forget about the Pistons. They just didn’t quite fit into our play on words.
There’s always something happening with the Pistons, from the infamous “Bad Boys” who led the Detroit Pistons in back-to-back NBA championships in ’89 and ’90, to the accomplishments of current players. Most recently, they announced a move from The Palace of Auburn Hills to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
While moving is a pain, the Pistons are no stranger to it. That’s right! They were originally founded in Fort Wayne, Indiana and didn’t move to Detroit until 1957. When they got here, they didn’t even have to change their name. The Pistons fit in perfectly with Motor City.
Our team at Rx Optical loves how many basketball players have started wearing goggles to protect their eyes during the game. Sports glasses are essential for any athlete!
The Detroit Tigers
There are a lot of tall tales about how the Detroit Tigers might have gotten their name, but the official story actually dates back to the Civil War.
Specifically, they’re named after the Detroit Light Guard. This was a military group that fought with such passion and jungle-like ferocity that they were nicknamed “Tigers.” Once the war ended and the troops returned to Detroit, the city’s residents asked permission to use the nickname. It was meant to show respect and appreciation to the military unit.
You many have already guessed, but they said yes.
Speaking of the Tigers, if you’re a fan, then you have to check out our guide to Comerica Park. Make sure to grab a pair of polarized sunglasses the next time you go watch a game so you can see all of the action on the field and protect your eyes in style.
The Detroit Red Wings
Detroit owns the title of “Hockeytown,” and that might be because the Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cups. That’s the most of any U.S. team! Plus, the Red Wings are one of the Original Six teams in the National Hockey League, which is a legacy to be proud of.
The team first débuted as the Victoria Cougars and changed to the Detroit Cougars in 1926. They briefly transitioned to the Detroit Falcons before finally settling on the Red Wings in 1932.
Hockey is cool (no pun intended), and so is the sport’s efforts to protect the eye safety of its athletes. As of the 2013-14 season, the NHL requires all players to have visors attached to their helmets to help protect their eyes.
Are you an athlete? Don’t forget to schedule an appointment for a pair of prescription sports glasses. Our team would love to find a pair that suits you. Plus, we always love a reason to talk with other sports fans about Michigan’s great teams.
